What is Pi Media
Founded in 1946, Pi Media is the oldest and largest student journalism society at UCL. We’ve been creating current, insightful and award-winning content on campus for over 70 years. Initially launched as a newspaper and named after former Provost David Pye, we now publish on three platforms: Pi Online, Pi Magazine and PiTV.
Pi Online is our fastest-growing platform, where we regularly post content across six sections: News, Opinion, Features, Science & Tech, Lifestyle, Culture. From breaking campus news to insightful commentary on student politics, in-depth investigations to environmental features, student life advice to reviews of the latest culture London has to offer, we cover absolutely everything on this platform.
Pi Magazine is our biannual features publication. Each magazine issue centres on a different theme, carefully chosen to drive discussion of current events and new ideas on campus. We pride ourselves on the professional journalistic and artistic quality of Pi Magazine. Look out for our launch events and pick up a copy of the glossy print magazine on campus.
PiTV is the broadcasting arm of Pi Media. We produce a range of video projects, from short documentaries, travel diaries and the Backstage Pass series, to student news coverage, political interviews and UCL Students’ Union investigations.
How does Pi Media work?
Pi Media is one of the largest and busiest societies at UCL, so organisation is key. The Pi Committee are at the centre of activity - managing the society day-to-day, launching exciting new projects, and representing Pi members. Individuals are elected to the Committee at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in March. Any positions that become vacant throughout the year will be filled through an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM).
The team is made up of: Marketing, Social Media and Events Officers, who work hard behind the scenes to raise the profile of Pi on campus, expand readership, and organise events; Welfare and Diversity & Inclusion Officers, who ensure the wellbeing and fair inclusion of all Pi members, as well as effective outreach; Heads of Design and Photography, who manage the visuals and source beautiful artwork; Editors-in-Chief, who manage production of great online, magazine and video content throughout the year; the Vice President and President, who are at the helm of the society, keeping an eye on budgets and membership, and liaising with the Students’ Union.
In addition to the Committee, there is an editorial team working with the Editors-in-Chief of Pi Online and Pi Magazine, a PiTV team working on broadcasting, and a creative team working with the Heads of Design and Photography. These teams are the first point of contact for all members of the society. Visit our Get Involved page to find out how you can contribute.
