Delancey & Co

NAOMI BLAIR HUNTS DOWN AUTHENTIC NEW YORK STYLE SALT BEEF

Must-try: Delancey’s signature Reuben sandwich
Price: ££
Good for: Hearty, authentic deli lunch
Overall: 4/5

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be finding January dark, dreary and depressing. Everyone is on a health kick, no one is drinking and you’re feeling judged for eating carbs. But frankly, if there ever was a time for comfort eating, it’s January, so I’m here to help.

If you’re going to pig out, then you may as well do it properly. So step away from your cheesy ULU jacket potato, put down that suspect SOAS curry and listen up; Delancey & Co is what you’ve been looking for.

Opened just six weeks ago on Goodge Street, Delancey & Co are livening up lunch time with their delicious, gut-bustingly huge sandwiches. Inspired by the delis of New York, Delancey & Co serves traditional Jewish cuisine made with the finest ingredients, including smoked salmon bagels, authentic chicken soup with Matzo balls (from £3) and of course, salt beef.

On our visit we managed to fit in all three of Delancey’s signature sandwiches, the Reuben (£9.75), the Bird (£8.75) and the Tokyo x Delancey (£8.75). All three were piled high with filling and gloriously messy to eat.

My favourite was the Reuben, served on marbled rye bread with stacks of amazing salt beef, Sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, topped off with Delancey & Co’s special sauce. The crunch from the freshly toasted bread contrasted beautifully with the tender beef, which simply melted in the mouth. My dining companion was a big fan of Delancey’s Bird, which came absolutely stuffed with oak-smoked turkey and mashed avocado. The smoked salmon filled Tokyo x Delancey was one of the best I’ve ever had, and the poppy seed bagel was perfectly chewy. If there’s one thing that Delancey & Co know how to do, it’s jam-packed sandwiches – the kind which elicit longing groans from fully grown men (and make for enviable Instagram food-porn posts).

Also on offer is some of the best chicken soup I’ve ever had, complete with rich Matzo balls – perfect comfort food for the cold winter months. Delancey & Co also offers a range of desserts from peanut butter cheesecake (£4.95) to cinnamon & raisin bagels topped with Nutella (£2.50). If you fancy a drink, there’s everything from beer to coffee, and even prosecco on tap (£4.95 a glass).

While Delancey & Co may not be one of the cheapest lunch spots in the area, it is arguably one of the best. One of their sandwiches is a meal in itself and will definitely leave you feeling fuller than a Sainsbury’s meal deal.

What’s more is that the lovely people at Delancey & Co will be offering UCL students and staff 10% off all food and drink if you show your ID card when ordering, making it the perfect excuse to indulge in the mother of all sandwiches.

So skip the detox and get down to Delancey & Co for a real January treat, and enjoy the exclusive discount.
