Fossil Free UCL Will Meet With Provost

THE UCL PROVOST HAS AGREED TO MEET WITH THE GREEN ENERGY GROUP, FOSSIL FREE UCL, AFTER HAVING RECEIVED AN ULTIMATUM EARLIER THIS MONTH.

The meeting with Michael Arthur is the last in a series of efforts to try to get UCL to “divest” from fossil free energy sources.

Earlier this term, the activist group staged a “die-in” outside the Provost’s office that was followed by the media at a national level.

An activist from the green energy group said that although they were “hoping for a productive meeting” it was unlikely that any progress would be made. Previous meetings have seen the provost emphasis the financial benefits of fossil fuels, being particularly worried about “the implications of PhD funding” should UCL divest.

Failure to reach an agreement could result in the group escalating their actions, with a “high risk” plan already in place.

They argue that divestment, which is the redirecting of funds from contentious to less sensitive sectors, has been seen globally and it is time “for UCL to lead by example” and follow its own principles of conducting “itself ethically and fairly, and in an environmentally sustainable manner, locally, nationally, and globally.”
