LGBT+ History Month at UCL

PRECIOUS ADESINA TAKES A LOOK AT THE MONTH AHEAD AS UCL GEARS UP FOR LGBT+ HISTORY MONTH

Tuesday 3rd February 2015 marked the start of UCL’s celebration of LGBT+ History Month. The series of events that will be taking place in accordance with this time of year commenced with a discussion on being a member of both the LGBT+ and the Christian communities.

LGBT+ History Month is a month-long annual long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of gay rights. It is celebrated in February, in the UK, to coincide with a major celebration of the 2003 abolition of “Section 28”.

The importance of counteracting the stigma against the LGBT+ community was emphasised when one of LGBT+ History Month banners, which had been put outisde UCL’s Gower street entrance, was graffitied in permanent marker with the Nazi Symbol after being up for only 3 hours. This “hate crime” has been reported to the Metropolitan police and campus security, though it is unsure whether this was a member of UCL or a passerby.

Throughout the month, UCLU’s LGBT+ society will be hosting a range of events, highlights include a Valentines party, a film screening of Romeos Club and a panel discussion, all the information can be found here. The rainbow LGBT+ flag will also continue to replace the UCL flag in the Quad for the rest of the month.
