Manifesto analysis: Activities & Events Officer
JESSICA HOWARD-JOHNSTON GIVES YOU TO DOWN LOW ON THE AEO
The Activities & Events Officer (otherwise known as the AEO) is concerned with the fun side of university life. A sabbatical position, they’re responsible for all things non-academic: be it societies, clubs, volunteering or balls. They’re in charge of the funding of clubs and societies and oversee the running of events. There are two candidates running: Asad Khan and Ella Skinner.
ASAD KHAN
“The next few years are critical for UCLU! … Revamping the current system by empowering the Arts, Sports and Societies officers will streamline progress and reduce the bureaucracy.”
You may have seen his large banner on the quad with his face emblazoned on it, but if not, Asad is focussed on altering the funding for clubs and societies. Previously a Student Trustee, he hopes to increase the funding for smaller, marginalised societies while also boosting the funding for sports societies in order to take them up a notch competitively. Asad is also committed to the return of the Garage Theatre.
ELLA SKINNER
“My main aims are to solve problems surrounding space, funding and events, whilst promoting inclusion and diversity”
Ella’s aesthetically pleasing pink poster details her hopes for a better and more simply run union in terms of extra-curriculars. A keen lacrosse player, she understands the lack of sports space at UCL and hopes to address this by improving the booking system for sports grounds. Like Asad, Ella is driven to find a new space to replace the much missed Garage Theatre. If elected AEO, Ella also hopes to improve UCL’s annual Summer Ball.
Voting is now open and will close this Thursday 5th March. To vote for AEO, log in to the UCLU website.
