UCL finally confirms additional £140K funding in mental health support
UCL Vice Provost confirms funding is secured following the efforts of the campaign “UCL: Fund Our Mental Health Services”.
In a post on the Student Union’s website on the 2nd November, Rothna Ahktar, Welfare and International Officer, included an image of an email from Professor Anthony Smith confirming that the “additional £140k funds for mental health have been awarded to boost our services.” This was after a meeting had been held with the Sabbatical Officers on Monday 29th October.
The funding is a result of the efforts of the student-led campaign “UCL: Fund Our Mental Health Services” which was launched in October 2017 and held a number of protests around campus last year.
The additional funding would ensure students get quicker access to psychological and counselling support, therefore reducing waiting times.
Despite the Union and campaign originally calling for an additional £340,000 in funding, the SU called it a “monumental win” for students but stated that they intend to keep up the pressure to ensure that UCL moves ahead and recruits the additional staff.
