2023 Fashion Trends To Look Out For
We ended 2022 wearing elevated classics made up of closet staples paired with a personal touch, depending on what TikTok ‘core’ we identified with most. This year is not so different; as inflation and a looming recession threatens us all, there is no better way to exercise control than deciding what you wear. Once more, 2023 looks to be a year of classics with a twist - this time, with a futuristic and functional approach.
Metallic silver
Futurism is in and metallic silver remains cool and chic. Modern and versatile, it can be dressed casually when used as an accessory, or as an effortless statement piece. Gucci’s Jackie bag, Prada’s sequined dresses, and Mach & Mach’s glossy heels are just some of fashion’s biggest names that have decked out their pieces in silver.
‘Future terrain’ print
Futuristic prints will be especially popular for menswear in 2023, and WGSN (Worth Global Style Network, the leading trend forecasting company) terms it ‘future terrain’ print. Extending upon the galaxy print most associated with 2013 Tumblr, it has been refreshed into new age planetary-inspired patterns that invoke extra-terrestrial aesthetics.
Lace
lace is back, as is the 90s revival; which seems to be cementing itself in fashion's little black book of classics.Opt into this trend through a simple yet daring slip dress as the nights get brighter and the air gets warmer. Alternatively, accessorise yourself in lace socks or ribbons for a beginner’s friendly approach. As mentioned in December, 2023 looks to be a year where lace, skin and Nensi Dojaka will reign supreme.
Off the shoulder
Speaking of skin, an off the shoulder top is functional without sacrificing sexy. An easy look that can be dressed down in the day and dressed up for the night, off the shoulder pieces come in an endless option of tops and dresses so you always have something to wear.
Flowers
Florals in Spring might not be groundbreaking, but it’s certainly headed for a comeback. This time, it’ll be in the form of applique flowers that are everywhere on the runways and easy to DIY at home. Flower chokers and tops have already been spotted on the likes of Hailey Bieber and Matilda Djerf.
Big bags
Think grown up tote bags Andy Sachs would wear in the Devil Wears Prada, or Marky Kate and Ashley Olsen shielding themselves from paparazzi. Cute but still completely functional, a Big Bag holds everything you need - your emotional support water bottle, manifestation journal, and even last season’s leather jacket.
Sporty footwear
Yellow Onitsuka Tiger shoes have been seen on almost every fashionable foot there is on TikTok and Instagram. Likewise, the Adidas Sambas (following a hugely successful Gucci collaboration) have been planted firmly on everyone’s feed - or should I say feet? This year’s focus on functionality means sportswear and especially sports shoes are in, so dig out an old pair of football cleats and you should be good to go!
