The Must-Try Student Friendly Restaurants around UCL
I think we can all admit that the long hours spent sitting in lectures or seminars are aided by the idea that after you can go out and get some food. However, on the whole, London prices are definitely not student friendly. But do not fret, here are some of the best restaurants located near our very lovely campus that will not break the bank!
Starting off strong, I have to mention that UNIDays should be any UCL students’ best friend, especially if you like pizza. You can use this app to get a 30% discount in Pizza Express (on Euston Road) and a £9.95 pizza and drink bundle at Franco Manca (on Tottenham Court Road) and who doesn’t love a sourdough pizza!
Warren Street is a gold mine for amazing restaurants and it is right next to campus so you cannot go wrong. If you fancy a quick Thai fix, Rosas’s Thai will sort you out with some delicious stir fry’s or curries; all in a relaxed, ambient setting but the food is prepared fresh and quickly for you to enjoy!
Alternatively, The Japanese Canteen has an amazing Katsu or Teriyaki Chicken for a very decent price. It is the spot to go to if you want to grab a takeaway and eat it on the steps of Portico as it's only a couple minutes from campus. Close by, Honest Burgers is always a reliable place to get a good (and honest!) burger – be sure to get their local ‘Warren Street Special’ which is a beef, bulgogi BBQ bacon, gochujang and kimchi burger – inspired by West End’s Korean shops.
Warren Street is also home to Bang Bang Vietnamese Café and has a wide range of buns and noodle soups. And if you can’t get enough of buns, Bao Fitzrovia (on Windmill Street) has an amazing selection. I recommend the classic or beef short rib bao.
Sometimes all we need to fix a stressful day is some fried chicken, I don’t know who said that, but it seems about right, so my next recommendation has to be Wing Wing over on Tavistock Square, it is the best place to grab some fried chicken and wings (go for the soy-garlic flavour) and is a great place to go with friends and share. Be sure to grab a ‘Pax Party Pack’ with four or more friends (it works out to roughly £8 per head) and have some wings, chips, calamari and coleslaw whilst chatting away.
If you continue down Tavistock Place, you’ll be sure to pass Bon Vivant, a cosy relaxed French Brasserie which has some cool dishes like their oven baked salmon with grilled artichokes. There's also dishes from pasta to burgers, so there is something to tickle everyone's fancy.
Lastly, there is Casa Tua, tucked away between Bloombury and Kings Cross, and maybe arguably more towards the latter, but who can argue when the home-style Italian food served at the welcoming venue is always spot on. The cozy weekend breakfast menu with warm porridge, your classic avocado toast and great coffee is definitely a must try.
