Closure of UCL Main Quad

UCL's 'landmark project' for the Main Quad redevelopment, commenced on February 5th. Over the past year, the two Sabbatical officers, Goksu and Ana, have overseen the UCL200 project. As part of the project, the Wilkins cloisters will remain closed for access. The project is scheduled to be completed and ready in early February 2026, just in time for UCL's 200-year anniversary.
The redevelopment plan responds to some concerns about Main Quad accessibility. The current space is not fully wheelchair accessible, with limited access to power, water, and seating. During winter months, the grass areas are unusable without stepping in mud. The New Main Quad will have more bookable space and new spaces for many clubs and societies to run their events, including a 'mini theatre' performance space behind each observatory.
UCL has also promised to enhance biodiversity by planting more trees and wildflowers. However, the initial Quad renovation plan included removing the three endangered Ginko trees to create a clear and accessible space between the Quad and the Wilkins building. The good news is that UCL Estates positively responded to the community feedback signed by many UCL students who urged them to sustain natural biodiversity. The architects will work closely with UCL Sustainability to preserve all three Ginko trees, subject to final statutory approval.
Hannah Milner, the Director of Capital Project, expressed that they are committed to meeting the needs of the community: "The proposed redesign to preserve the trees shows UCL's dedication to listening to the voices of its community where possible whilst continuing to place inclusivity at the forefront of the project."
This work will affect activities planned in the Quad and surrounding buildings in 2025 and early 2026, including events like Fillifest and Welcome Fair. UCL has secured Gordon Square for large-scale events, such as this week's International Festival. Event spaces are available in the Senate House, The JBR, exclusively for clubs and societies on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after 3 pm, Saturday and Sunday, and some external venues. The fully covered and heated Wilkins Terrace is available from 4 pm every day and on the weekends. Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works post updates regularly.
Students hope the redevelopment plans run successfully without causing any disruptions to student activities and enhance their experience in future.
