Thailand Legalises Same Sex Marriage

As the bill regarding same-sex marriages took effect last Thursday, hundreds of partners have finally been able to profess their love under the eyes of the law in Thailand.

Indeed, the National Parliament voted last year for the legalization of same-sex marriages with adoption rights, making Thailand the third Asian country to authorize these unions. Since it was officially enforced last week, beautiful scenes have been seen across the country, newlyweds happily crying while getting out of a shopping mall, where an event was organized to celebrate this milestone or walking down ‘pride carpets’.

However, this law has not emerged in a day, it is the result of the work of many charities and of the courage of same-sex partners who have challenged the position of the Thai government.

As such, this legalization comes as a relief for many couples who have been waiting for years to unite themselves and legally raise a family. Under this law, they can finally create a family, with the same rights as heterosexual partners.

“It’s the happiest day of my life. We could finally and completely do what we have been wanting to do for a long time,” said Pisit Sirihiranchai, who was one of the first married under this legislation, with his partner of 5 years. While this couple has been waiting for a few years, some have been waiting for decades, such as Rungtiwa Thangkanopast, who just married her partner of 18 years.

In a world context where homophobia is rising, especially with the re-election of Trump in the United States, the protection of the LGBTQ+ community’s rights is particularly crucial. Thailand must then be an example of the path to follow when only 39 countries recognize same-sex marriages.
