With national elections in more than 70 countries, 2024 is the biggest election year in recorded history. From Algeria to Brazil, 4 billion citizens globally will use their votes to express their support or discontent, hoping to improve their immediate environment.

So why shouldn’t you? The UCL Student Union elections coming up on March 11th are a similarly valuable opportunity to voice your opinion on how the organization that represents the 50 000-strong student body is run.

Hence, submitting your vote means influencing how the effort and resources of the SU are directed to improve students’ experiences. This would not only mean events we know and love carrying on, be it sports night, puppy meet-and-greets or holiday celebrations, but also the planning of new ones. Just last year saw the introduction of the summer festival, mental health campaigns like “All Jokes Aside” and new activities at UCL East.

In fact, radical ideas for the improvement of students’ academic lives are in student leaders’ DNA. From founding the first Gay Society in 1970 to organizing the first Wheelchair Basketball showcase in 2023, it is clear Student Union representatives have never been afraid of pushing the status quo in terms of diversity and inclusion. Thus, a vote in the SU elections would drive efforts in creating a sense of belonging in the UCL community and more representation for marginalized groups.

So, submit your choices digitally for Sabbatical Officers, Student Officers, Students Trustees, Network Representatives and Society Positions between the 11th and 15th of March. Turning up counts in improving what makes UCL a great place to be, its students.
