Varsity 2026: UCL Men’s Basketball Victory

UCL Men’s Basketball secured an 83-75 victory over KCL in a fiercely contested Varsity match. The game featured tight first-half exchanges, an electric atmosphere and a decisive third quarter that put UCL ahead.
The Franklin Building was already buzzing before tip-off, fresh off the adrenaline of UCL’s Women’s Netball win. Pre-match warm-ups included dunks from both sides, which drew cheers and engaged the crowd. Chants of “Come on UCL!” mixed with horns and defensive encouragement set a lively, competitive tone.
The first quarter was tightly contested. KCL struck first, but UCL quickly responded keeping the score close. Sinan Sensurucu made an early statement, sinking two three-pointers that lifted UCL and energised the home crowd.. A strong defensive play by a KCL player and notable blocks from UCL kept momentum shifting. Fouls and free throws intensified the atmosphere, and the crowd reacted audibly, joining in with defensive chants. By the end of the quarter, UCL led narrowly, 19-18. It was clear that neither side was willing to give an inch.
The second quarter remained neck-and-neck. Carlo Buffoni opened with a clean three-pointer, giving UCL an early lift, but KCL responded with a three of their own to take the lead 28-34 at 3:33. UCL battled back, closing the gap to 32-34, and levelling the score at 36-36. Throughout, the crowd was vocal, chanting and encouraging both teams, while referee decisions and throws continued to heighten the tension. In the final moments, Domas Vazgys scored a deuce in the last 20 seconds, putting UCL 40-38 ahead at halftime. The energy in the hall felt playoff-like, with every possession met by noise.
If the first half was balanced, the third quarter was where UCL flipped the script. The team opened with a series of deuced and maintained momentum through effective rebounds, including a three-pointer that extended the lead to 49-38 at 8 minutes. Successive scores brought the advantage to 55-42, and by the end of the quarter UCL led 65-54. The crowd responded to each basket, creating a lively, engaged environment as the home side established a clear lead.
KCL tried to rally in the fourth, but UCL continued to extend their advantage. Domas Vazgys and Deji Adedigba scored crucial deuces, while UCL’s defence limited KCL opportunities. The lead fluctuated briefly, but key rebounds and scoring maintained UCL’s position. Deji’s late rebound and deuce drew one of the loudest reactions of the night. UCL held on to finish 83-75.
After the final whistle, fans described the win as “deserved” and “intense”. Players credited the crowd for lifting them during the tight moments, especially in the first half.
In a fixture defined by pressure, noise, and momentum swings, UCL’s composure in the third quarter proved decisive. It was a performance full of grit, energy, and big game moments - and a Varsity win that will be remembered by players and supporters alike, especially after such a charged atmosphere.
